A European citizen’s initiative launched earlier this year by two white supremacists seeking the mass deportation of people through so-called ‘remigration’ has been formally rejected by the European Commission.
“It will not be registered by the commission,” said Roxana Mînzatu, the EU commissioner for social rights.
Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Wednesday (22 July), Mînzatu said the initiative lacked a legal basis. A more detailed brief said the initiative would have constituted discrimination grounded on race and ethnic origin.
Yet the so-called “Save Europe Act” had still amassed almost 600,000 signatures (as of publication), including from ultranationalist politicians, ethno-nationalist activists, and various European Parliament lawmakers who were all demanding the EU keep the continent predominantly white and Christian.
Hungary’s former prime minister Viktor Orban had signed it, as did his newly-minted MEP Balázs Orbán. So too did Germany’s Björn Höcke, the far-right chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Thuringia, previously fined for using Nazi-era slogans, plus Maximilian Märkl from Germany’s Identitarian Movement.
The MEPs include Italy’s Roberto Vannacci, who recently launched the far-right National Future and which has ideological parallels to the pro-Russia AfD.
Other notable MEPs, who also signed, are Austria’s Petra Steger, Belgians Filip Dewinter and Barbara Bonte, Germany’s Tomasz Froelich, Slovakia’s Milan Uhrik, Slovenia’s Branko Grims, and Poland’s Dominik Tarczyński.

It also sought to entice others to voluntarily deport, including those that “constitute a serious cultural or financial burden to member states.”
Vlaardingerbroek had earlier this month staged a publicity stunt in front of the European Parliament, in an effort to drum up support for her act.
“The people want remigration!” she later posted on X. Remigration is a far-right euphemism for mass deportation of immigrants, including those who may have European nationalities.
