The UK government has pledged an additional £53m for the Farming Innovation Programme (FIP), bringing total funding to £123m this year.
The investment includes dedicated funding rounds focused on robotics and soil health and water management.
Delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, FIP helps farmers, growers and businesses turn new ideas into real-world solutions. The programme supports innovation from early research and development through to on-farm tech trials and commercial deployment.
The investment forms part of the government’s industrial strategy commitment to invest at least £200m in agricultural innovation by 2030.
The roadmap sets out how farmers can reduce reliance on costly inputs like fertiliser through new technology and smarter nutrient management.
It also outlines how they can adapt to the growing impacts of extreme weather and climate change through nature-based solutions such as improved soil health and water management.
“Farmers feed our nation and manage the land that shapes our countryside, yet their contribution has never been valued in the way it deserves,” says Emma Reynolds, environment secretary.
“Our roadmap marks a shift away from only looking to the next harvest and towards a plan that gives farmers the long-term clarity they need to innovate, invest and grow with confidence for generations to come.”
