Ukrainian Army General Staff claimed responsibility for the strikes but denied aiming their weapons at civilians.
KYIV — Ukrainian armed forces hit multiple targets in Russia on Monday night, damaging an airport in Belgorod and a microchip manufacturer building “electronic warfare and weaponry” for Russia in the Bryansk region.
Aleksandr Shuvaev, acting governor in the Belgorod region, said three people were killed and 11 injured: “Although most of the missiles were intercepted, some struck civilian infrastructure,” he wrote on Telegram.
The Ukrainian Army General Staff claimed responsibility for the strikes but said they only targeted military facilities: “Two defense industry facilities in the Bryansk region, the oil depot at Belgorod airfield, bridges and other enemy targets have been struck,” the army wrote on Facebook.
Russian defense ministry claimed it shot down 452 Ukrainian drones over 16 Russian regions and occupied Crimea, while Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said over 430 of those drones were heading towards the Russian capital before they were shot down by air defense.
The strikes follow Russia’s deadly attack on the Ukrainian capital on Sunday night, which killed at least 12 people and injured at least 50. The attacks prompted President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to call for more Western support. “It is critically important that the world — first and foremost the United States and our European partners — come out of the NATO summit in Turkey with strong decisions in support of our air defense,” Zelenskyy wrote on X on Monday.
