As Phone Fraud Accelerates in Moldova, Suspicion Falls on Russia

Phone fraud has become increasingly common in Moldova, and some experts say the trail leads to Russia.

In front of Chisinau’s bustling central market, police officer Viorica Pascari was on a mission to alert the population to the threat of large-scale financial scams being perpetrated over the phone.

“We chose this location because of the daily high flow of people, including elderly citizens who often fall into the trap of scammers,” said Pascari, a prevention officer, as pensioners stopped to take flyers and share their own experiences.

“Most of them have already been called by scammers but understood that it was a fraud and did not continue the conversation,” Pascari told BIRN.

While not new, phone scams have reached an unprecedented level since the beginning of the year, prompting several government agencies and telecom companies to send warnings via text message and engage the police across the country.
