What are the Secrets Behind Serbian President Vucic’s Resignation Pledge?

It’s highly unlikely that Aleksandar Vucic intends to become a private citizen with no state position. But how does he intend to remain at the centre of power? He’s not telling.

At a rally held by the Serbian Progressive Party and its partners on June 27, Aleksandar Vucic announced he would resign as President of Serbia “within a few weeks”. That was the only piece of actual news to come out of this event.

His entire speech at the rally in front of the National Assembly building was contradictory and hollow. He has been trailing this resignation for some time anyway – only previously it was “a few months” away. Perhaps in the coming period he will start advertising it as “a few days”.

On the question of election dates – both presidential and parliamentary – Vucic offered not even a hint. He is clearly keeping his options open, running calculations, keeping political opponents confused and exhausted in the hope that, as he has managed so many times before, he can pit them against each other and split them.

It is no secret to anyone in Serbia that the President sees his political future in the role of Prime Minister. He already held that position between 2014 and 2017. All levers of power were then in his hands in the government building on Nemanjina Street, just as they shifted to the Serbian Presidency on Andricev Venac from 2017 onwards.
